Why You Should Always Use a Base Coat Under Press-On Nails

A base coat might seem like an optional extra, but it's one of the most valuable steps in any press-on nail routine. Whether you're using nail glue or adhesive tabs, applying a Crown Bite undercoat first makes a measurable difference to how long your nails stay on — and how healthy your natural nails look when you take them off.
What Does a Base Coat Do?
A base coat creates a smooth, clean surface on your natural nail that optimises adhesion. It fills in tiny ridges and imperfections on the nail surface, giving the glue or adhesive tab a better surface to grip. It also forms a protective barrier between your natural nail and the adhesive, reducing the risk of staining, thinning, or any surface disruption.
Better Adhesion
When applied correctly, a base coat improves the bond between your natural nail and the press-on. This means press-ons are less likely to lift at the edges or pop off during normal activities. The difference is especially noticeable for people whose nails naturally produce a lot of oil — base coats neutralise that oiliness and create a drier, grippier surface.
Protection for Natural Nails
Even though Crown Bite press-ons are gentle on natural nails (see our guide on whether press-ons are safe for natural nails), a base coat adds an extra layer of defence. Over time, regular press-on use without a base coat can lead to slight surface dulling. A base coat prevents this completely.
Preventing Staining
Dark-coloured nail polishes (and some press-on adhesives) can leave yellow stains on natural nails over time. A base coat acts as a barrier that prevents any pigment from transferring to the nail surface.
How to Apply a Base Coat Before Press-Ons
1. Clean and buff your natural nails as normal.
2. Apply one thin coat of Crown Bite undercoat to each nail.
3. Allow to dry completely — this usually takes 1–2 minutes.
4. Proceed with your normal press-on application using nail glue or adhesive tabs.
Pair your undercoat with a top coat over the pressed-on nails for maximum longevity and shine.
