Press-On Nail Sizing Guide: How to Get the Perfect Fit

Imrath Khanam

One of the most overlooked steps in press-on nail application is sizing — but it's one of the most important. A nail that's too wide lifts early. One that's too narrow looks unnatural. Getting the fit right is the difference between press-ons that last days and ones that stay flawless for two weeks.

How to Measure Your Nails

Use a fabric tape measure or a strip of paper to measure the widest point of each nail — usually just above the cuticle. Measure all ten fingers, as sizes often vary between hands and even between fingers on the same hand. Once you know your sizes, head to the Crown Bite press-on nails collection and match them to the size options included in each set.

Matching to Your Size

Crown Bite press-on sets come with a range of sizes to suit different nail beds. Match each measurement to the closest size available. When you're between two sizes, always go smaller — you can file a press-on down slightly using a nail file, but you can't make it wider. Pick up a Crown Bite nail brush to keep your prep tools complete.

The Golden Rule

The press-on should sit edge to edge across your nail bed without overlapping onto the skin on either side. If it touches your skin, the nail glue bonds to skin rather than nail — and the press-on will lift within days no matter how well you applied it.

Prepping the Nail Before You Apply

Once sized, prep your natural nails before reaching for the glue. Lightly buff the surface, push back your cuticles, and wipe each nail with an alcohol wipe to remove all oil. Apply a layer of Crown Bite undercoat to protect your natural nails and improve adhesion — it makes a noticeable difference to how long your press-ons stay on.

Quick Sizing Tips

  • Lay all your sizes out in order before applying any glue
  • File the sides of a press-on gently if it's slightly too wide
  • Get sizing right on thumbs and index fingers first — they're the most visible
  • Always size both hands separately — they're rarely identical

After Application

Once your press-ons are on and sized perfectly, seal each nail with a Crown Bite top coat over the surface and tip. This locks the edges down and extends your wear significantly. And when it's time to remove them, use a Crown Bite debonder to take them off safely without damaging your natural nails.
